About Me

Hello! My name is Haesue Baik and I'm a junior at the University of Michigan studying Robotics and Computer Science. My interests include HRI and the coding side of robotics.

Robots have fascinated me for years. The way they interact with each other to solve problems together as well as how they interact with people and the world around them leaves so much to learn. A lot of my coursework has been a combination of my two majors, learning how to use code to make robots move, see, and understand the world around them.

The other thing that has really driven me is making robots that people will use. It's incredibly important to develop a robot that is approachable and intuitive that people want to use, else a robot can quickly become an expensive piece of junk. This has led to my passion in HRI, which is the research I am currently working on in Professor Y Z's Z lab Atombot project.

Outside of school, my hobbies include playing video games with friends, reading Brandon Sanderson, and on occasion crocheting. My biggest hobbie however is rock climbing, both indoors and outdoors. The community and problem solving of the sport make it my favorite passtime.

Personal Philosophy Statement

A passion for learning and a natural curiosity about the world have guided me throughout my life. From being a young girl watching high school robotics teams in awe to now conducting research in robotics myself, I’ve followed that curiosity every step of the way. I love my classes and find deep satisfaction in applying what I’ve learned to my research projects. My goal is to inspire others to pursue their passions with the same enthusiasm that drives me.

My love for understanding robotics led me to pursue a double major in Robotics and Computer Science. The more I learn, the more connections I see between different areas of study, and it’s exciting to watch everything build upon each other. I especially enjoy courses where I get to code on robots, as it combines both of my passions—programming and robotics—in a way that feels both challenging and incredibly rewarding.

Beyond the technical knowledge, my coursework has taught me the importance of communication and teamwork. Collaborating with others to achieve a shared goal is one of the most fulfilling experiences, whether in team projects or splitting tasks in my research lab. I love not only working on my own projects, but also helping others discover their interests and encouraging them to dive into what excites them. Seeing someone light up when they find what they enjoy is just as fulfilling to me as my own achievements.

At the core of my philosophy is the belief that passion is contagious. When you pursue what you love with enthusiasm and dedication, you inspire others to do the same. That’s the kind of ripple effect I want to create in the world—one where people feel empowered to chase their dreams and make meaningful contributions to the things that matter to them.

2024 SMART Goal

By the end of the year, I will complete at least one leadership course or workshop, and apply the skills by leading a project or team activity.
